Background
What this actually is
NZ is 2,000 km from its nearest neighbour and at the end of global shipping routes. Almost all refined fuel, virtually all pharmaceuticals, most fertiliser and effectively all electronics and vehicles are imported.
Marsden Point ceased refining in 2022 and became an import terminal. This removed the ability to produce fuel from crude domestically and shortened the effective national fuel buffer.
The country produces far more food than it consumes, but the food system itself runs on imported diesel, fertiliser, agrichemicals and machinery parts. Food security is therefore an energy and logistics question, not an agricultural one.
