What this actually is
Advanced-economy public debt sits at levels previously reached only during world wars, while interest costs are rising. Servicing that debt requires either growth, austerity, default or inflation — historically governments choose inflation because it is the least visible.
True hyperinflation requires institutional collapse and is rare in developed economies. The realistic version is a decade of 5-10% inflation that halves purchasing power, destroys savers, and drives political instability.
The transmission to households is through rent, food, energy and insurance — the non-discretionary categories that inflate fastest and cannot be substituted away.

New Zealand has high household debt relative to income, an economy heavily weighted to housing, and an import-driven inflation channel via the exchange rate. A weak NZD raises the price of fuel, food inputs and everything imported. Insurance is a specific NZ pressure point: reinsurers are repricing seismic and flood risk, and some regions are becoming difficult to insure at all.
