Background
What this actually is
The Alpine Fault ruptures roughly every 300 years, and the last major event was in 1717. Paleoseismic trenching has produced one of the best-dated earthquake records in the world, which is why the probability estimate is unusually confident by seismology standards.
An M8 rupture would shake for two to four minutes across the whole South Island. Expect thousands of landslides, immediate closure of every alpine pass, severed road, rail, power and fibre links, and landslide-dammed lakes that later fail catastrophically.
The AF8 programme has planned the response in detail. The planning assumption is that West Coast communities will be isolated and self-reliant for at least seven days, likely much longer, with access restored by sea and air before road.

Westland, Buller, Southern Lakes and inland Canterbury and Otago are most exposed. Christchurch, Dunedin and Nelson would experience strong shaking and damage. Fibre and power interconnections between regions would be cut, isolating communities digitally as well as physically. The economic cost has been estimated in the tens of billions.

Early warning signs
- No short-term precursors are expected — plan on zero warning
- AF8 and GNS periodically update rupture probability; follow those rather than rumours
- Any long, strong shaking in the South Island: drop, cover, hold, then check for tsunami risk if coastal
